Hotels close to the Waterfront and Cape Town city center can cost you up to R2000 or more per night. For less expensive accommodation try areas like Somerset West, Strand or Gordon's Bay. Still easy accessible from the airport, very safe with a more small town feel with Cape Town only 50 km away.
