The following are just a selecting of beaches in the Cape Town area.  There are most probably more beaches that might be even be better.  But the following are a few that we chose to highlight.

Fish Hoek Beach

Fish Hoek Beach

Fish Hoek beach lies in a valley between mountains and is a popular swimming beach.  By road Fish Hoek is about 30 km from Cape Town city center.  The beach is about 1.5 km long and lifesavers are on duty during peak summer holidays.  Other activities include sun tanning, body surfing, boogie boarding and kayaking.  A walk path called Jager Walk on the Simons Town side of the beach is a great way just to enjoy the fresh sea air.  Shark spotter are also on duty and lately a shark net has been installed for safer swimming.  The Fish Hoek beach also has a restaurant and children play area.

Strand Melkbaai Beach or Milk Bay Beach

Strand Melk Baai or Milk Bay

Strand Melkbaai beach is about 50 km from Cape Town and is popular swimming beach.  Surfing, boogie boarding and body surfing is also popular.  In summer from early morning till late at night people jog and walk on the beach.  The beach is very safe as there are always people around.  On the right hand side of the beach you also get mini-golf and super tube.  Son Surf Surfing School in the same area also give surfing lessons so it’s easy to learn how surf.

Gordon’s Bay Main Beach

Gordon's Bay Main Beach

Gordon’s Bay main beach is ideal for sun bathing and also has area’s with green grass if you prefer grass.  There are also a Spur Steakhouse on the beach and several coffee shops and places to eat can be found on the road passing next to the beach.  Bikini Beach books is a bargain second hand bookshop were you can pick up second hand books at very reasonable prices.  Another favourite eating place for Italian food is Miguel’s Alforno’s and Tallas Restaurant right on the beach road.

Gordon’s Bay Bikini Beach

Bikini Beach Blue Flag

Gordon’s Bay Bikini beach is just few kilometres from Gordon’s Bay Main Beach just behind the Gordon’s Bay harbour.  Bikini Beach has the well known Blue Flag status and is situated in such a way that it is more protected from the wind and weather.  Right next to Bikini Beach you will also find the Gordon’s Bay harbour with a couple of places inside the harbour area where you can something to eat.

Kleinmond Beach

Kleinmond Beach

Kleinmond Beach is a beautiful beach that also has blue flag status.  The waves are massive and Kleinmond Beach has a long white sandy beach.  A restaurant where you can also have something to eat has also been recently built right on the beach.  On the right hand side of the beach there is a lagoon with picnic areas and it is also possible to hire paddle skis and boats.

Hermanus Grotto Beach

Hermanus Grotto Beach

Hermanus Grotto Beach is bit further from Cape Town but also have blue flag status and Hermanus is always worth a visit.  Hermanus has grown over the years into a bigger town with lots of holiday houses and shops.  Grotto beach has strong large waves with one of the beautiful beaches in the Western Cape.  There are also close to the beach a place where you can have something to eat.  Visiting Hermanus during the whaling season is also a must as it is probably one of the best places in the world to watch whales from the land.  Hermanus is about 120 km from Cape Town depending on the route you take. The route via Grabouw is faster but the road via Gordon's Bay runs between the mountain and the sea with beautiful views of the sea and coastline.
